The Browser Company published the Windows version of the Arc web browser today. According to reports, more than 150,000 people have been using the Windows version, which the company began testing in December.
The company, which wants to take over your current browser, has received $50 million at a value of $550 million. The Browser Company made its Windows version available to everyone today; no waiting list was required. The queue used to have over a million names.
The business debuted in 2022 with a Mac-based version available exclusively by invitation, and then in July 2023 it became available to everybody.
To reuse and share most of the codebase with the Mac version, the Browser Company chose to develop the Windows version in Swift. Initially, Apple created the programming language Swift to create Mac and iPhone applications. Using Swift on Windows will simplify future feature parity maintenance. To aid developers wishing to migrate their Mac applications, the business has also published a great deal about its experience developing Swift on Windows.
Specifications for the Windows edition
Arc for Windows includes some essential Mac features, such as the sidebar with the most visited web pages pinned up top; Spaces, which function as folders for various sets of tabs for different tasks like “Work,” “Entertainment,” “Vacation,” and “Notetaking”; profiles for separating browsing data and preferences; split view for opening several tabs in a single window; and picture-in-picture video player support, allowing you to view other tabs while watching a movie clip.
The Windows team has also added the peek function, absent from the first version. From the pinned and favorites tabs, Peek allows you to see a brief link preview without actually clicking on it.
To enable users to access their sidebar, spaces, folders, and tabs across devices, it unveiled Arc Sync this month. This functionality is also available in the Windows version.
Because the Windows version enables touchscreens, it stands out primarily from the Mac version.
Little Arc, a floating browser window for quick tasks like accessing a link, is absent from the just-launched Windows version, however. If the Windows version has AI-powered functionality like link preview summaries, renaming downloaded files, quick links to serve websites directly, and live folder updates automatically, the business did not say.
Perspectives
Although the company is working on compatibility for Windows 10, Arc for Windows only supports Windows 11 at the moment.
Though it didn’t provide a timeframe, the business did state that it aims to achieve feature parity between Mac and Windows.
The Browser Company debuted Arc Search as an iPhone app earlier this year. The firm said that it will soon release an Android Arc Search client with the most recent version.
