Despite causing a worldwide IT meltdown with its recent software update, CrowdStrike is not avoiding attention. Interestingly, the company’s president, Michael Sentonas, made an appearance at the Pwnie Awards to graciously accept the award for Most Epic Fail.
The awards were held at Def Con, immediately following the Black Hat conference, where CrowdStrike had a prominent presence with a large booth, distributing complimentary T-shirts and action figures. A representative informed Eltrys that the company expressed their sincere gratitude and appreciation for the Black Hat community during the event.
A video of Sentonas’ acceptance speech has been circulating on the internet. Just like the conference attendees who were open to giving CrowdStrike another opportunity, the audience at the awards ceremony displayed genuine enthusiasm and appreciation for Sentonas’ presence as he acknowledged the company’s errors.
The organizers clarified that this ultimate accolade was a spontaneous change, as it seemed inconceivable for CrowdStrike to not emerge victorious. Then, as a hilariously oversized trophy was brought on stage to enthusiastic applause, Sentonas acknowledged that this is “certainly not the award to take pride in receiving.”
“The team was taken aback when I confidently stated that I would handle it,” Sentonas continued. Admitting our mistakes is crucial, and we have acknowledged this multiple times. It is essential to take responsibility for both our successes and our failures.
Sentonas expressed his intention to bring the trophy back to CrowdStrike HQ and prominently display it as a constant reminder of their commitment to protecting people. He emphasized the importance of acknowledging their mistake and ensuring that everyone understands the gravity of such occurrences.
