Mark Zuckerberg said today that Meta has begun developing a feature that would display thread postings on Mastodon and other networks that implement the ActivityPub protocol.
“Making threads interoperable gives people more options for how they interact and allows content to reach more people.” “I’m fairly optimistic about this,” Zuckerberg said in a blog post.
While this is a crucial step toward Threads being a part of the federated social network, Zuckerberg did not elaborate on how the integration may operate.
It’s unclear what the plan for Threas’ ActivityPub integration looks like, but it might allow you to easily cross-post between Mastodon (or other ActivityPub-powered networks) and Threads, as well as transfer your data around.
When Threads debuted in July, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri said that the social network would not be integrated with the Fediverse at the time. He did, however, highlight that Meta was continuing to integrate its newest platform with the decentralized social network.
“We’re committed to incorporating support for ActivityPub, the protocol that powers Mastodon, into this app. “We weren’t able to complete it in time for launch due to a variety of issues associated with a decentralized network, but it’s on its way,” he stated at the time.
Threads offered a means for users to verify their Mastodon profile in August. The corporation included “rel=me” links, which allow two accounts to form a connection by directing links to each other.
Today’s declaration from Zuckerberg is Meta’s first genuine indication of the desire to integrate Threads into the decentralized social network architecture.
