Drizly, an alcohol delivery firm Uber bought for $1.1 billion, is closing three years later. Drizly operated independently until Uber closed it, according to Axios.
Uber Eats never integrated Drizly, despite plans at the time of the purchase. By March 2024, the company announced that Drizly would no longer be available.
“After three years of Drizly operating independently within the Uber family, we’ve decided to close the business and focus on our core Uber Eats strategy of helping consumers get almost anything—from food to groceries to alcohol—all on a single app,” Uber SVP of Delivery Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty told Eltrys. Our thanks to the Drizly team for their numerous contributions to the creation of the BevAlc delivery category as the original industry pioneer.”
Drizly announced a 2.5 million-customer data breach in 2020. The FTC ordered Drizly to destroy any non-essential personal data last year. It also requested a rigorous security scheme from the alcohol delivery firm and its CEO, James Cory Rellas.
Uber Eats has increased alcohol delivery internationally, the firm says. Uber Eats delivers alcohol in 35 U.S. states and 25 countries.
Before Drizly, Uber bought Postmates for $2.65 billion in 2020 in all-stock.
Uber Eats tested chatbots to identify restaurant bargains and reorder favorites last year. The business has begun letting customers order from two local outlets simultaneously.
