Late this year, Google Maps will get geospatial AR material.

At its annual Google I/O 2024 conference, Google announced that customers will soon be able to view geographical augmented reality (AR) material directly on Google Maps on their mobile devices. In the course of a test program that will be launched later this year, the feature will make its debut for the first time in Singapore and Paris.

To get access to the augmented reality information, users will first need to search for a specific place via Google Maps. If there is augmented reality material at the location and the user is in close proximity to it, they will be required to raise their phone and touch on the picture that reads “AR Experience.”

When someone is investigating a location from a distance, they are able to see the same augmented reality experience in Street View. Once they have explored the augmented reality material, users have the ability to share their experience on social media by using a deep link URL or QR code.

Players in Singapore will have the opportunity to see well-known sights such as Chinatown and Gardens by the Bay, as well as sample the region’s cuisine and witness a ceremonial dragon dance. Users visiting Paris will witness the country’s pavilions situated along the Seine River during the 1900 Exposition Universelle, as well as the numerous changes made to the renowned Eiffel Tower.

According to Google, these augmented reality capabilities serve as the basis for the extended reality (XR) platform that the company is developing in conjunction with Samsung and Qualcomm for the Android ecosystem.
