GM will let Super Cruise users utilize the hands-free ADAS across 750,000 miles of US and Canadian roadways. This development will almost treble the automaker’s Super Cruise network by 2025, including rural and minor roadways that link smaller cities and townships.
The improvement comes as manufacturers push innovative driver-assistance technologies to entice consumers and earn income beyond car sales.
Super Cruise employs lidar map data, high-precision GPS, cameras, radar sensors, and a driver-attention system to check the driver’s attentiveness. The system will accelerate or stop to maintain a specified following distance from a vehicle ahead, steer to maintain lane position, and automatically change lanes to overtake slower traffic when triggered. Towing a trailer will allow drivers to deploy the system. The company says automated lane change is not accessible when trailering.
The business said Cadillac CT6, Chevrolet Bolt EUV, and Cadillac XT6 customers cannot use the enhanced Super Cruise network.
Super Cruise does not need hands-on steering, unlike Tesla’s Autopilot. However, they must look straight ahead. Ford’s 2021 Blue Cruise hands-free system competes.
The first fully hands-free ADAS, Super Cruise, debuted in 2017. Despite the system’s capacity, GM wasn’t a dominant player since it drastically restricted Super Cruise access. The feature was limited to divided roads and only available in the Cadillac CT6 for three years.
In 2022, the company doubled its Super Cruise highway network to 400,000 miles. GM applied the technology to additional brands and models. The Chevy Bolt EUV, Chevy Suburban, Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Silverado, GM Hummer EV SUV, and all Cadillac models are among 15 cars worldwide with Super Cruise. New vehicles like the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia will include Super Cruise with trailering.
