iOS design startup Play lets developers share app prototypes via App Clips.

Apple launched App Clips on iOS 14 in 2020. Developers may share a portion of their program with consumers so they can try it out without downloading it. Play, an iOS design software, now allows developers to share app prototypes via software clips (like this one).

Dan LaCivita, co-founder and CEO, told Eltrys on a call that designers and developers struggle to share prototypes with their team or customers.

“If I’m developing an app and want to share a prototype on a phone, someone must watch a video, try a web simulation, or install another app. As a native design tool, we can utilize all of Apple’s system aspects to deliver a complete app experience via a prototype, LaCivita stated regarding Play’s App Clip capabilities.

He stated that some of the aforementioned ways may not convey the developer’s aim for a feature or function. App Clip performs better. LaCivita believes this will speed up app creator feedback.

App Clip may be accessed on iPhones by scanning a QR code, tapping an NFC-enabled surface, or clicking a link.

Testing using app clips
After launching App Clips in 2020, Apple has made several adjustments. The business has raised the app clip size restriction from 10MB to 15MB and now 50MB.

The firm also allowed developers to call App Clips from another app during WWDC last year. An app clip lets someone order meals via a messaging or map app.

Despite these updates, it’s unclear how developers are using App Clips for testing or demonstrations.

Wiley Hodges, a former Apple marketing executive, revealed in a June 2022 podcast that App Clips failed because they were released during the epidemic.

Unfortunately, App Clips launched during the epidemic, driving people inside. Many individuals forget about these in-the-moment and on-the-go encounters. Developers encouraged us to wait to embrace app clips since everyone is inside, he said.

Developers must work hard to make app clips discoverable, as AppleInsider noted in December 2022.

In 2021, Play received $9.1 million in investment from First Round Capital and Oceans Ventures. Early 2023 seed extensions raised $5.5 million for the firm. Along with First Round Capital, Cursor Capital, and Irregular Expressions, Badrul Farooqi, a former Figma executive, led the round.

After raising its latest round, the business introduced a Mac client so designers can work with iOS components on a desktop and sync data. In Xcode, developers may create SwiftUI code to layout views.

The startup has established a team and individual tiers with thousands of active users and expects to create an enterprise-specific tier shortly. The company will allow developers to construct more complicated interactions this year. Play will also establish a communal library for people to contribute their work.

LaCivita said Play may create design tools for the Apple Watch and Mac in the future, but it is now focused on iOS.
