The Opening Move feature on Bumble relieves women of the need to always think of fresh messages.

Since its debut in 2014, Bumble has operated by allowing women to initiate contact. The firm intends to offer women even more autonomy ten years later. The firm is introducing a new tool, “Opening Move,” which allows women to pre-write an opening sentence, allowing them to communicate quickly without having to come up with something new for each match.

The app underwent a major redesign on Tuesday, which includes the feature. Women may also select extra dating intention preferences and prompts, prepare questions to send to matches, and more.


In same-gender or nonbinary pairings, either user may initiate and respond to an opening move, according to the business.

The upgrades implement significant improvements at a time when dating app weariness is on the rise, particularly among Gen Z users who are tired of the swipe culture. With its latest version, Bumble seems to be attempting to improve and attract younger people. The business intends to launch additional AI-powered capabilities and other enhancements later this year, including maybe enabling males to send the initial message.

Users may choose from pre-written questions on Bumble or make their own to put up Opening Moves, including “What do you like about my profile?” and “What book or movie altered your way of thinking?” Apart from reducing some of the initial message concerns, the new tool may be a useful method for asking a deal-breaker question to eliminate inappropriate matches.

Senior product manager Dara Alsulayman from Bumble told Eltrys, “We wanted to listen to our members in that respect and help them find more ways to make that first move feel a little easier.” We recognize that it can sometimes be burdensome to start a chat every single time.”

Alsulayman said that Bumble intends to “add support for dynamic opening moves,” which would allow users to transmit more than one opening move at a time.

As previously reported by Fortune, Bumble tested the Opening Move feature in a number of regions, including Australia and New Zealand. In its Tuesday news release, the business reports that the feature increased reaction rates and lengthened discussions throughout the testing period.

To help focus the dating search, Bumble has updated profiles, extending its Intentions badges—an additional filter option available to premium users. The dating app incorporated, for example, more precise goals than just seeking a “relationship,” “something casual,” or “marriage.” Beginning today, users may choose between “life partner,” “intimacy without commitment,” “fun, casual dates,” and “ethical non-monogamy.” And a profile may now display two intents.

To highlight which three causes and groups a user supports—feminism, ecology, and LGBTQ+ rights, for example—Bumble has introduced a new Interests area.

Hundreds of new prompts and categories to make it easier for users to locate prompts are just two more ways Bumble is helping daters showcase their personalities on their profiles. An “About Me” section, for instance, now includes suggestions like “My humble brag is,” “I’m known for,” and “I’m a real nerd about.” Other categories include date nights and self-care prompts.

As a result of the upgrade, new users now have to upload four photos to their accounts instead of just two. Alsulayman explains that individuals with more photographs establish connections more successfully. A typical grievance from unhappy members is that some haven’t uploaded enough pictures.

Alsulayman stated that Bumble, which is over 10 years old, also debuted a new logo and updated app design with strong typefaces and a more “modern” vibe.


“The new design feels a lot more in line with what our users have been asking for,” she said.
