Google will enable more Play Store real-money games.

Google stated today that it would enable additional real-money games (RMG) on the Play Store this year, following local rules.

The search giant said the initiative with increased support for real-money gambling would launch in June in India, Brazil, and Mexico, with additional countries to follow.

Google may also change membership and in-app purchase fees. The corporation didn’t reveal its developer cut.

“With this policy update, we will also change our RMG service fee model to reflect Google Play’s value and help sustain the Android and Play ecosystems. In a blog post, Google director of Global Trust & Safety Partnerships Karan Gambhir stated the company is working with developers to ensure our new approach matches the industry’s unique economics and developer earning structures.

Google usually allows local, regulatory-governed real-money gambling applications. The business will enable more legal but unregulated real-money gambling applications with the policy change.

In 2021, Google began adding real-money gambling applications to the Play Store. It piloted fantasy sports and rummy applications in the Indian Play Store in 2022. Last year, Google extended the allowed applications until January 15. Pilot applications will get a grace period until June 30 with the current announcement.

Due to its fantasy sports features, Google removed Paytm’s Play Store app in 2020.

The pilot has age and ID verification rules. In November, Google began a similar experiment in Mexico that will run until June 30. Developers may then launch real-money gambling applications on the Play Store beyond fantasy sports.

Google said it would publish comprehensive regulations on the move in the coming months, including age limitations and geo-restrictions.

Google Play Store’s earnings will depend on a new service charge on real-money games as the firm faces global pressure to let developers utilize alternate payment methods. The user-choice billing model, launched in 2022 and continuing with select partners, discounts service rates by 4%.
