Government orders forced ByteDance to shut down Resso in India.

ByteDance will shut down Resso in India at the end of the month after New Delhi asked Apple and Google to remove it. A Chinese corporation plans to grow TikTok music in many areas.

Sources informed Eltrys that the authorities ordered Google and Apple to take down Resso. Sources indicated ByteDance opposed shutting down the service due to operating restrictions.

It verified the news and stated TikTok Music won’t debut in India.

“Unfortunately, local market conditions prevent us from serving Resso users in India. We will shut down Resso and its activities on January 31st. “ByteDance will refund the remaining subscription fees,” a spokeswoman stated.

Moneycontrol reported that Resso is off the Play Store and App Store. The streaming service is still accessible for app users, but new subscriptions are unavailable. Apple and Google didn’t respond quickly.

Resso, which debuted in 2020, last operated in India. The streaming service operated in Indonesia and Brazil. However, ByteDance released TikTok Music in both markets in July. The firm said Resso will close in Brazil and Indonesia on September 5.

ByteDance introduced Resso subscription-only in May 2023 to provide “a better user experience for music fans while increasing opportunities for rightsholders and artists.”

Data.ai said that Resso was downloaded over 21 million times on iOS and Android in India last year, and customers paid $2.9 million on in-app purchases.

ByteDance introduced TikTok music in Australia, Singapore, and Mexico, but not in Indonesia or Brazil.
