Indian audio giant BoAt says it is investigating a potential customer data breach.

BoAt, India’s leading audio and wearables brand, is currently looking into a potential data breach following the discovery of a collection of customer data that was advertised by hackers on the internet.

Uploaded on a well-known cybercrime forum is a sample of customer data, containing full names, phone numbers, email addresses, mailing addresses, and order numbers. Based on our analysis of exposed phone numbers, it appears that a portion of the data reviewed by Eltrys is authentic.

The hacker claimed that the breach occurred in March, resulting in unauthorized access to over 7.5 million customers’ information.

BoAt is currently looking into the matter and is conducting an investigation, although they have not provided any specific details at this time.

“BoAt is aware of recent claims regarding a potential data leak involving customer information. We are committed to thoroughly investigating these claims and have already initiated a comprehensive investigation. Ensuring the security of customer data is our utmost concern at BoAt,” the company stated.

The leaked data contains mentions of Shopify. According to Athenil, the hackers reportedly stated that they acquired the data by using stolen credentials from BoAt’s systems.

BoAt, with prominent investors like Warburg Pincus and South Lake Investment, dominates the Indian market for wireless earbuds, capturing almost 34% of the market share, as per IDC data. BoAt is a leader in India’s wearables market, with an impressive 26% market share.

In 2022, boAt, with a valuation of $300 million in its Series B round of $100 million in 2021, filed for its IPO with the aim of raising up to $266 million. The company, though, decided to delay its plans for a public listing due to a decrease in activity in the public market.
