IOS 17.4 auto-generates transcripts for Apple Podcasts

In iOS 17.4, Apple Podcasts now supports auto-generated transcripts, making it easier for listeners to follow along. Only English, French, German, and Spanish podcasts will have transcripts. Over 170 nations and regions will get it.

Live-text versions of episodes emphasize words as viewers listen, similar to Apple Music lyrics. The user may tap anywhere in text to play an episode at that location. Click the new “quote” symbol at the bottom of the Now Playing screen to view the transcript. Hold down on the episode information page and click “View Transcript” to access the transcript without listening.

Apple software automatically generates a transcript for each episode. Since the firm indicates there will be a “short delay” in processing the transcript, it may not appear immediately after the episode is published. The business said back catalog episodes will be transcribed “over time.”.

Changing the availability option in Apple Podcasts Connect lets creators share their own transcripts. If uploaded transcripts don’t satisfy Apple’s requirements, they won’t be shown. Spelling and punctuation should be perfect.

The business warns that cross-talk may “limit the quality of the transcription.” When content restrictions are activated, “explicit episodes” show no transcripts. Neither will Apple transcribe song lyrics.

Most of the changes in iOS 17.4 in beta today concern EU developers, including a new price structure, frameworks and APIs for alternative browser engines, and opportunities to distribute iOS apps from alternative app stores. iOS 17.4 should be launched in March.

Apple released iOS 17.3 this week, including Stolen Device Protection and collaborative Apple Music playlists.
