Amazon accepts employee credentials for its ‘Just Walk Out’ tech.

Amazon’s computer vision and sensor-powered Just Walk Out retail system, which lets consumers shop and avoid the cashier wait, is now available in corporate settings with employee badge payments. Just Walk Out technology will first be used in hospitals with “badge pay,” the retail giant revealed today.

Doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers may now scan their credentials to buy food and drinks from Just Walk Out. The badge links to the employee’s payroll deduction account, enabling them to buy food and beverages after the hospital cafeteria closes. Amazon says staff may check their receipts and account balance on their hospital’s badge pay web portal or mobile app.

The technology is debuting at St. Joseph’s/Candler’s Candler Hospital Campus in Savannah, Georgia. Amazon and healthcare automation supplier CBORD implemented the technology at the hospital shop. Besides healthcare professionals, hospital visitors may purchase at the store using debit or credit cards or mobile wallets and get their receipts at justwalkout.com/receipts. Food and nutrition supplier Morrison Healthcare operates Candler Hospital’s shop, serving over 950 hospitals and healthcare systems.

A hospital executive claimed the test was meant to see whether the idea should be implemented elsewhere.

The debut was announced by St. Joseph’s/Candler president and CEO Paul P. Hinchey, who stated that Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology complements our smart medicine approach by bringing high-tech solutions to patients, visitors, and co-workers, even with meal service. With this technology, Candler Hospital coworkers and visitors caring for friends and family may easily buy meals, snacks, and beverages to go back to their loved ones during the third shift. He said that we would study its effect post-launch to see how we may deploy this technology on our other campuses.

Just Walk Out has added badge pay to its list of recent additions, including RFID tag support and support for concession booths and university shops where students may use their meal plan accounts. Amazon launched Just Walk Out Statistics, which provides aggregated and anonymized statistics for shops that have integrated the technology.
