The company OnePlus has consistently followed its own unique approach, which has had both positive and negative outcomes. The company has recently ventured into the field of mobile artificial intelligence with their latest product, the AI Eraser. The product in question is not merely a rebranded version of Google’s well-known and highly effective Magic Eraser.
OnePlus has independently developed its own version of AI technology, demonstrating its ambitions in the field. Oppo’s company likely has been working on AI Eraser for a significant amount of time. However, the public became aware of Google’s version during the Pixel 6 event in March 2021. On the other hand, Google introduced Magic Editor a year earlier at I/O 2023.
According to its press material, the company appears to have developed this product from scratch, beginning with the creation of its own first-party large language models.
The company states in its press material that the development of the AI Eraser is a direct outcome of a significant investment in research and development by OnePlus. The new feature utilizes a proprietary LLM that has undergone training on a large dataset, enabling it to effectively understand intricate scenes. The AI Eraser utilizes advanced visual comprehension techniques to effectively replace undesired objects with contextually suitable elements, thereby enhancing the overall aesthetic of the photo. This feature empowers users to perform professional-grade photo edits conveniently and flexibly, regardless of their location or time constraints.
The AI-powered eraser is an extremely useful feature that Google successfully implemented right from the start. It is not advisable to allocate one’s research and development resources to directly compete with a feature that is already accessible on both iOS and Android devices through Google Photos.
We can interpret this as OnePlus’s strategic move to establish its presence in the highly competitive smartphone market, which has been particularly eventful this year. We expect OnePlus to utilize its resources in future iterations to create a unique product that sets it apart from other existing properties.
This month, OnePlus devices will begin to deploy AI technology, starting with the OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R, OnePlus 11, OnePlus Open, and OnePlus Nord CE 4. The R12-D12 will not receive this update.
